Your Lack of Focus is Impacting Your Time Management

by Tyra Pickett Leave a Comment

Procrastination is something we’re all familiar with.  It’s the evil twin of productivity. Whether you’re working on a personal project or something related to your professional life, a lack of focus ruins everything. Believe it or not, it’s something that impacts most people’s work lives as much as their personal lives.  According to most studies, an acute lack of focus at work impacts productivity like nothing else. Your lack of focus is impacting your time management.

Your Lack of Focus is Impacting Your Time Management

How a Lack of Focus Affects Time Management and Productivity

Staying focused on your work is essential to get it out of the way. Hence, it’s much more important than an organizational methodology or a work routine. If you can’t focus on an assignment, it won’t get done. It doesn’t matter if you’ve devised a way to meet that ridiculously tight deadline. If your focus wavers, you won’t get anything done.

Bear in mind that your attention is a scarce resource. It won’t be there forever, and you will eventually get bored. Intellectual, creative, or even mundane work requires focus. You may need a short period of rest after an intense period of focus, but you can recover easily. However, if you keep putting off work, then productivity and time management will go with it.

A study done in the UK has shown that wasted time can cost businesses a total of £80bn per year. That’s staggering. It’s what most companies aren’t even worth, let alone their revenue streams. A McKinney Report found that 9% out of the 1500 surveyed respondents were very satisfied with their time allocation.

Lack of Prioritization

Refusing to prioritize your work may put more on your plate than you can manage. This can happen when work piles up and can lead to more work piling up. For example, an employee may have three assignments in a day. If one is more important than the others, it’s their responsibility to get it out of the way first.

A lack of focus in professional settings can lead to improper time management, which can lead to more work piling up. It’s a vicious cycle that feeds on itself. Most people deal with this by focusing on what is most urgent at the time. However, that may just lead to them leaping from crisis to crisis.

That doesn’t bode well for productivity at all. Hence, it’s better to have a schedule that prioritizes different assignments over others. That way, you can deliver the most critical work without affecting workflow.

Missed Deadlines and Appointments

Missed deadlines are now a cliché for the most unproductive amongst us. What usually ends up happening when employees don’t focus on their workload is leaving everything to the last second. Without being too dramatic, this can lead to disaster.

It can lead to important developments being delayed that depend on you meeting that deadline. It can even delay a very critical deal in some cases. At the very least, you can get a stern lecture from your superior, at the worst, you can get fired.

Wasted Time

Losing focus when working on an assignment not only means that you will get sloppy at it. It will also mean that you will waste time on unimportant things. For instance, if you’re preparing a report on hazards at a potential construction site, a work plan will optimize productivity.

If you have those hazards outlined which you need to look for, you won’t waste time trying to search for random safety issues. A site without electrical power or circuitry will scarcely have any electrical hazards, etc.

Hence, outlining work plans and conceptually understanding an assignment can save a lot of time down the lane.

A Decline in Work Quality

Work piling up can eventually lead to you trying to get it all done in a hurry. What this ultimately causes is a declining in work quality. I don’t care who you are, you will miss things and drop the ball on critical junctures if you blaze through an assignment. Even computers make mistakes, what chance do you have?

Make efficient use of time as it is granted to you. You may be astonished to learn how much focus and time management increases your productivity and effectiveness at work.

Lack of Professionalism

Missed deadlines and late deliveries can often reflect badly on your performance at work. This can affect any possible bonuses or promotions in your future. You may get passed over in favor of another candidate.

Your overall work ethic and performance can steamroll your arguments if you ask for a raise. If you ask your supervisor to write you a recommendation for another job, they may hesitate or flat out refuse. All these things can sprout from a singular lack of focus.

Breakdown of Relationships

This is perhaps the biggest disadvantage of a lack of focus at work. If your lack of professionalism and tardiness becomes known to your fellow employees and supervisors, it can strain professional relationships. Say a team is being put together to pursue an expansion project, or deliver on a new type of product. You may get passed over because of your non-professional attitude towards work.

This may occur even if you’re a great employee in other respects. You may deliver some of the best work at the company. However, if you’re tardy, they may pass you over for a project that requires impeccable time management. The worst part about this is, management positions, and senior executive positions require that you budget your time carefully. Disregarding focus means you will get passed up for those positions in favor of those less talented, but more efficient.

Your lack of focus is impacting your time management and drains your ability to perform to the best of your talents.  Wasting potential will only hurt your success later in life. It will require work, it will require discipline, but the payoffs are much better than the alternative.

One way that you can improve your focus at work is to outsource things that can take up a lot of your time from focusing on the most important stuff.
