The Importance of Meeting Construction Project Deadlines

by Tyra Pickett Leave a Comment

Construction projects are notorious for delays. Construction delays are known to be regular for projects, both big and small, due to the labor, planning, and processes involved. Deadlines and timelines are very important for construction projects. Whether you’re waiting for the completion of an apartment complex or a four-story mansion, you’re bound to encounter a few delays.  Here is the importance of meeting Construction project deadlines and why they matter.

Different delays can affect costs, labor, and reputation

There are a whole lot of things that you need to consider when thinking about construction projects. There are material costs, labor, and design.  However, the first thing that you need to discuss is trust.

Trust

In the construction business, they say that the best clients are the ones that you already have. They are the ones that can make or break you. Construction delays demonstrate this phenomenon wholeheartedly. These customers are the ones that can mark you as a great or terrible construction company. Trust me when I say, there is no in-between. There is no okay construction company, just like there is no okay internet service provider.  You’re either great or terrible.

Construction project delays destroy the trust that people place in you. Hence, meeting project deadlines is the most important thing that a construction business can do. This is not just about meeting the deadlines that are set at the very end, but about meeting every single deadline consistently. You know how you set your debit or credit card to pay your bills automatically, this is that in a nutshell. Your clients need to trust you to the extent that they know a deadline will be met without fail.

If you can keep your promises and meet deadlines the first time you meet your clients, you may be forgiven the next time. However, if you fail the first time, that client is going to take their business elsewhere.

Safety

Meeting project deadlines is also in the interest of safety. If a deadline is missed, the construction project managers try to get the labor force to speed up the process. In doing that, there is a high chance of accidents happening because of failure to follow protocol.  In ignoring safety protocol to cut costs, there can be irreparable damage done to the labor force.

Tight deadlines always become safety concerns. Safety always needs to trump that. That means that construction project delays need to be eliminated completely.

Costs

Completing projects in a time frame is crucial to saving on costs. Not only does it help you to utilize the maximum amount of costs efficiently, but it helps you to save for the next project. You will likely have to incorporate unaccounted general conditions in the original budget in the event you miss deadlines. Hence, it will throw your entire planning out of sync. More than that, your reputation will suffer. Overspending and not delivering is not going to propagate great word of mouth.

Meeting deadlines on the job is critical, but it’s easier said than done. If you meet deadlines, it’s an indicator that you’re effectively utilizing your funding. It’s an indicator that you’ve found a way to work within your budget without constraints. It’s also an indicator that you can plan well with the resources that you’re given.

They say that the only guarantee in construction is setbacks. The best construction project managers know how to get past them. Construction project deadlines not only show how good of a construction project manager you are, but how great of a money saver you can be. Thus, the importance of meeting Construction project deadlines.

Technology

The importance of embracing technology is at the heart of the importance of meeting deadlines. Meeting deadlines means embracing the best of technology in construction. In a world where most of the construction industry is not using the most advanced technology, meeting deadlines is hard.

Using drones, implementing GPS technology and using technology to map out and stress test structure is all part of meeting deadlines. It leads to a more efficient use of resources and a better use of time. Hence, meeting deadlines helps to indicate whether your company is using the best technology. It’s an indicator of a company’s chances of surviving the competition out there.

Communication

The importance of meeting deadlines is perhaps nowhere as pressing as in communication. When communication breaks down, deadlines are never met. Whether it’s relating to approvals being made or the right messages being sent, deadlines always matter. When deadlines aren’t met, it signals to a breakdown of communication.

Nowhere is this more pressing than with the approvals’ process and workflow. This is a place that you could benefit from improving to meet deadlines. In fact, embracing Virtual Assistants can help you meet those deadlines faster. Virtual Assistants can help you approve files and improve workflow speeds.

The importance of meeting Construction project deadlines, specifically for a new business is incredible. Not only does meeting deadlines help you in improving your chances of getting more projects, but it builds your reputation.  It’s not only an indicator of how your labor and material funding is being utilized but it is a marker of how well your departments are working apart and together.
