How an OBM Can Help Manage Your Newly Remote Staff

by Tyra Pickett Leave a Comment

The coronavirus pandemic has led to massive unemployment around the world.  In this uncertain time, you should consider hiring an OBM, they can help manage your newly remote staff.  On the other hand, those who are lucky enough to have a job still, are mostly working from home.  However, working from home has its challenges, including security, management of services, and so forth.

Group of remote employees

Online Business Managers

From employee inefficiency to performance inconsistency, remote work comes with several obstacles.  However, there are relatively quick and inexpensive ways that OBM’s can solve those.  Here are just a few ways that OBM’s can help you manage your newly remote staff from home operations to ensure they run smoothly.

Regular Daily Check-Ins

Employees working remotely need to be in constant communication with management.  Working remotely means employees aren’t in the same work environment as before, and they’re not under the same kind of obligation to deliver.  Hence, it’s helpful to remind them of their duties and make sure they’re aware of their responsibilities.  OBM’s can help you to manage your newly remote staff in a variety of ways that are not just effective but economical.

They could organize a series of one-on-one calls that will allow employees to work more independently.  They can also arrange team calls so that team members can discuss different strategies to get their work done.  A vital aspect of this daily check-in is that the calls should be regular and predictable.  They shouldn’t catch anyone off guard and should be designated to be at one time. This will help to provide an environment of the workspace within an employee’s home.

Also, OBM’s can make sure that the call works both ways.  If there are any problems that the employees are facing, make sure they know they can reach out.

Several Communication Options

One thing that an OBM can do very well to help you manage your newly remote staff is to provide alternative, communication options to employees.  In light of working from home, communication is necessary.  Without it, gaps in communication can grow, and inefficiency can take over several projects.  A breakdown in communications can result in several deadlines being missed and several teams working out of sync.

However, luckily, we live in an age of digital solutions.  Therefore, OBM’s can recommend different communications solutions to different teams for various purposes.  Better yet, they can standardize a communications’ solution that works for the entire company.  This doesn’t just constitute an app that can be used for voice calls and video calls.  It also represents a file transfer app as well as a platform that allows for real-time edits to be made to files.

The communication option will also be made entirely secure so that strangers and security threats can’t break-in.  This will be better for all communication to be kept secret by the company.  For all file transfers, documents, and information exchanged, the solution chosen needs to be secure.

OBM’s can provide a solution that satisfy all these requirements by ensuring 2FA as well as encryption. Solutions include the apps  Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, etc.

Rules of Engagement

Rules of engagement need to be established during remote working.  This means managers setting expectations for work frequency, communication, and delivery.  OBM’s can help you manage your newly remote staff and can make your employees aware of what is expected of them.  Daily check-in meetings are part of this process.

Employees should be told how they can reach out to their management.  They should also be notified of whom to contact if they have technical issues.  All employees should also make sure their work schedules and problems are made known to management. These can include any emergencies that come up, any adjustments they’ve had to prepare for work from home, and so on.

All of these protocols and rules of engagement should be established early on.  They should be made clear to the employees at the onset.  This will reduce the frequency or the very existence of any delays or mistakes.  Some specific problems may come up, that is inevitable.  However, taking care of the more fundamental issues will help make operations smoother.

Remote Social Interaction Opportunities

An essential step that an OBM must take is to structure ways for employees to interact remotely.  For employees to improve at collaboration, they need to communicate more than in a professional capacity.  They should be allowed to socialize as they do at work. Hence, at the beginning of calls or in between any daily requests, they should be allowed to socialize.  They should be allowed to catch up with each other and find out how everyone is doing.  This may seem like a useless platitude, but it helps in bridging the gap between employees.

Managing Your Newly Remote Staff

Finally, OBM’s can help you manage your newly remote staff by offering words of encouragement and support.  OBM’s can emphasize this by getting in touch with individual employees and commending them on their work.  OBM’s can also implement this by asking executives to leave a little voice note for the employees.  These words of encouragement can do wonders for employee morale and help offset anxiety.

In these trying times, many people are dealing with personal demons and problems that no one else is aware of.  A kind word here and there can help.
